Abstract

This presentation explores the pervasive skill shortages in regional, remote, and rural Australia, emphasising the unique challenges these areas face in the effective use of artificial intelligence. These areas are already experiencing a digital divide between urban centres within Australia, with reduced access to key infrastructure and limited training opportunities beyond secondary education. Using the Australian Skills Classification system, the research outlines the current skill sets required for A.I. usage, revealing pronounced deficiencies in these communities. This is further exacerbated by a lack of training opportunities further exacerbating the skill gap. To address these issues, a comprehensive framework aimed at upskilling individuals in information technology (I.T.) within these regions is proposed. This framework advocates for the integration of localised training initiatives, and partnerships with educational institutions and industry leaders. By fostering a more inclusive approach to digital education, our framework aims to empower regional, remote, and rural communities, enabling them to harness the transformative potential of A.I. and contribute more effectively to the national economy. This presentation underscores the urgency of bridging the digital divide to ensure equitable skill development across Australia.
