Abstract

Megalocytiviruses (MCVs) are the cause of high mortality diseases that have severely impacted aquaculture since first identified in 1990 (Inouye et al., 1992). Within the genus Megalocytivirus, Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) is considered the type species, which was first reported from a temperate freshwater host, mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) (He et al., 2000, 2001). MCVs have a broad host range, including fish from 50 species living in both freshwater and marine environments. Disease outbreaks have been reported in a range of tropical and temperate regions as reviewed by Kurita and Nakajima (2012). However, most disease outbreaks have occurred in east and southeast Asia (Subramaniam et al., 2012). From the phylogenetic analysis, there are three ISKNV genotypes identified as red seabream iridovirus (RSIV), ISKNV, and turbot reddish body iridovirus (TRBIV), and each genotype has been further separated into two clades (Koda et al., 2018). RSIV disease is listed by the World Organization for Animal Health as being an infection with either RSIV or ISKNV (OIE, 2018). The focus of this chapter will be on pathobiology of ISKNV and TRBIV with a particular focus on ornamental fish as there is a separate chapter dealing with only RSIV.
