Abstract
An increasing number of higher education degrees/other qualifications in Australia and at other major English-speaking universities worldwide have been designed with broad entry requirements without requiring qualification in a cognate discipline. While these degrees remain popular, they often fail to adequately address students’ limited understanding of course requirements, assessment tasks, and academic expectations of the discipline. This chapter reports on the relative success of an embedded teaching and learning program in a media and communications foundation subject at the postgraduate level in a major Australian university. The embedded program involved collaboration between disciplinary academics and teaching specialists and primarily focused on reducing frequent instances of academic misconduct by improving students’ discipline-specific academic literacy.
