Abstract

The effectiveness of educating students and staff in higher education on the impact of cyber bullying has received limited attention in the literature. It is this scarcity of research that has driven this innovative study, the development of an educational website to inform students and staff in postsecondary contexts about cyber safety and the very real consequences of cyber bullying for people's lives. Furthermore, the intention of the site is to reduce the stigma associated with cyber bullying, build greater awareness in the institution of preventing cyber aggression, and increase help-seeking behaviours. The pilot study described in this paper, reports the opinions of students and staff (n=20), as documented in an online survey, as they view an initial version this ground-breaking site. Overall, most users found the site useful in raising awareness and providing information specific to cyber bullying within the higher education environment. Findings acknowledged the power of the screen graphics, visual aesthetics, and short video clips designed to show concepts associated with educating users about ethical cyber engagement. The results of this pilot study will inform the redesign of the site.
