Abstract

[Extract] Nursing scholarship has greatly deepened understanding of care, advocacy and professional identity. Yet many of the conditions now shaping nursing work are produced beyond the bedside. Longstanding sociological critiques have also urged closer attention to the organisation of nursing work (Allen 2001, 2014). Experience‐oriented qualitative approaches, particularly phenomenological and other experience‐focused traditions, have illuminated how nurses and patients make sense of care, suffering, moral tension and professional life. These insights have been intellectually significant and ethically meaningful, shaping professional education, reflective practice and debates about the nature of care. Within nursing workforce scholarship, such approaches have also helped reveal how nurses interpret constraint, emotional labour and the demands of contemporary practice.
