Abstract

Science communication is often discussed in terms of external facing communication which allows for the translation of complex scientific concepts into accessible knowledge for the purpose of empowering informed decision-making and public engagement. However, science communication can also be used internally within science disciplines to facilitate the cultivation of students’ professional identities. Fostering the development of a strong professional identity during undergraduate studies is foundational for personal and professional growth, setting the stage for a successful and fulfilling career. However, within the Australian university context, there has been a noticeable reduction in the development of a clear professional identity within undergraduate psychology students. This trend may be a consequence of decreased opportunities for traditional face-to-face engagement between staff and students due to flexible delivery modes and/or a result of norms established during the COVID19 pandemic. Consequently, this case study aimed to explore the development of professional identities of undergraduate psychology students at a regional Australian University. It focused on whether a collaborative, interview-style podcast series showcasing the diversity and opportunities within the discipline could increase a sense of belongingness and community. The podcast series consists of 10 individual 15-20 minute episodes, each featuring a conversation between students and established members of the discipline (academic staff, clinicians, postgraduate students). Data collection using a pre-post survey design is underway. The survey explores students’ professional identity, perceived belongingness within the discipline and university, and career intentions. Discussion of findings will centre on the benefit of using science communication as a tool to foster professional identities of undergraduate students. Cultivating a stronger professional identity has implications for improved student retention, performance, meaningful engagement in degrees, and career progression.
