Abstract
Sandile Gwebu investigated the properties of photochromic compounds and their application in multi-functional organic electronics. Diarylethene-based main-chain photochromic polymers with various length alkyl side chains and conjugation lengths were designed, synthesized and were found to be soluble in most common solvents and photo switchable in both solution and thin-film states. Polymers were patterned using soft lithography techniques thus proving potential application in photoswitchable organic electronics.
