Abstract
[Extract] Stewart Goetz, Professor of Philosophy at Ursinus College, PA (USA) builds upon his 2015 work A Philosophical Walking Tour with C. S. Lewis, with a thought-provoking analysis of C. S. Lewis’s views on higher edu-cation. While Lewis never wrote a singular, comprehensive work on the matter, Goetz has been able to use references scattered throughout Lewis’s writings to craft an analysis of the purpose of higher education. In an era where Australian universities increasingly emphasise corporate elements, Goetz’s exploration offers a refreshing approach, incorporating a spiritual dimension that resonates with the fundamental reason many pursue higher education: the sheer pleasure and enjoyment of learning. This perspective strikes at the core of academic pursuit, reminding the reader of the intrinsic value of knowledge acquisition.
