Abstract

Successful student learning outcomes within veterinary anatomy, are related to the ability to utilize mental three-dimensional (3D) visualization skills to discern crucial structures and combine them into an anatomical understanding of the body. Students who cannot successfully transition from two-dimensional (2D) to 3D, seem to have significant problems in the anatomy discipline.

For this reason, cadaveric learning and dissection are still utilised as a 3D option. However, cadavers are costly in terms of acquiring fees, delivery, maintenance, and ethical issues.

With this in mind, we propose an aesthetically pleasing reusable canine front limb model for students, allowing them a comprehensive review and interaction of the superficial and deep muscles. The model offers the opportunity for students to remove and place each muscle in the correct orientation using the origin and insertion points on a canine front limb skeleton. The ability to see, touch, hold and carefully examine something is not only an important aspect of spatial learning, but has been shown to improve student engagement and interaction. It has also been demonstrated that the use of such physical models yielded significantly better results when compared to other educational methods such as sophisticated and potentially expensive computer visualization technologies.

We hope that the use of this model will shift the focus of teaching from knowledge transmission to knowledge construction by students, thus further improving learning outcomes, spatial information acquisition, and long-term knowledge retention.
