Abstract

In this chapter the social construction of knowledge is examined from a different perspective where knowledge is socially produced. But intellectual knowledge is not this chapter's main concern, rather a novel epistemological stance is taken in recognising a private, personal and intuitive form of knowledge. or knowing, that is socially constructed or produced in teaching and learning interactions in the classroom. This constituted knowing, though silent and often invisible, acts in powerful ways to enhance or diminish participation and the student's sense of self as a successful student.
