Abstract
This entry to the Encyclopedia of Teacher Education examines different ways that initial teacher education (ITE) providers and academics from around the world have approached the challenges of incorporating environmental and sustainability education (ESE) within their work. An understanding of the diversity of ways of approaching such a task is useful in revealing the structural and pedagogical complexity of developing student teachers’ capacities in ESE. The first section provides an overview of ESE as pertaining to ITE, with a focus on the role, importance, challenges, and current status. The next section examines different approaches to ESE in ITE. The final section summarizes what we know and considers the problems and possibilities for improving the contribution of ESE in ITE.
