Abstract

The South Pacific Commission region covers 29 million square kilometres of ocean and comprises 22 island nations. The University of the South Pacific is a regional university which meets the educational needs of 12 of these nations. Its main campus is based in Suva, Fiji. In 1991 the university had almost 10 000 students, 70% of whom undertook their studies by distance education. The university is one of the largest resource bases in the region, and the university's main library in Suva is also one of the largest in the region. In view of this, and the small sizes of the few national and other libraries in the region, the USP Library has assumed a number of roles normally not associated with a university library.
