Abstract

Outlines the circumstances that led to the establishment of the Pacific Information Centre within the University of the South Pacific Library, and the development of the Centre's premier publication, the South Pacific Bibliography. The South Pacific Bibliography was established as part of a strategy aimed at improving or developing national library systems and contributing to a greater awareness of the range of publications being produced in the region. It was intended that the Bibliography be used both as an acquisitions tool and as a cooperative cataloguing aid. The environment of small-scale publishing in the Pacific is described because of the impact this has on collections. Opportunities for further developing the Bibliography and other PIC publications are described, bearing in mind the needs of librarians and researchers in the region. © 1999, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
