Abstract

This chapter explores the intersection of two recent shifts in education—integrating informal learning in formal learning settings, and a focus on language as one of many communicative forms, or modes. We first identify the gap between pedagogic practices in classrooms and their initial curricular visions. We then suggest that multimodal pedagogy shows considerable promise for twenty-first century literacy education. This is followed by a description of a framework for the analysis of multimodal texts and an example illustrating multimodal pedagogy. The chapter concludes with some recommendations for research and practice.
