Abstract

Herbivory is a critical process that underpins coral reef structure and function. High levels of herbivory favor corals by excluding upright macroalgae and cropping abundant filamentous algae (Steneck 1988, Hay 1991) that otherwise negatively impact settlement of coral larvae (Kuffner et al. 2006, Nugues and Szmant 2006, Birrell et al. 2008, Dixson et al. 2014) as well as growth and survivorship of adult corals (McCook et al. 2001, Jompa and McCook 2003, Rasher and Hay 2010, Vega Thurber et al. 2012). Thus, the removal of herbivores often results in a decline in coral abundance (e.g. Lewis 1986, Hughes et al. 2007, Burkepile and Hay 2008). As corals decline, species-rich and topographically complex coral reefs transition to flattened, species-poor reefs, often with compromised ecosystem function (Graham et al. 2006, Alvarez-Filip et al. 2009, Hughes et al. 2010). These transitions frequently result in feedbacks that negatively impact coral recruitment, growth and survivorship and keep reefs in a coral-depauperate, algal-dominated state (Mumby and Steneck 2008, Nyström et al. 2012, Adam et al. 2015a).
