Abstract

An Other Place invites six visual artists from Australia and Ireland to respond to Tasmania through an exhibition of site referential installations.

In developing the curatorial premise for An Other Place, Kelly was inspired by notions of cultural and environmental dislocations and similarities that he experienced recently while living as an Australian expatriate in Ireland. Through the medium of visual arts An Other Place explores the familiarity/ unfamiliarity engendered by the historical and cultural connections and disconnections between Tasmania and Ireland.

Research Statement

Research Background	In 2006 independent curator Séan Kelly invited 6 artists - 3 Australian: Fiona Hall, Julie Gough, Lucy Bleach and 3 Irish artists: Linda Quinlan, Austin McQuinn, Alex Pentek to exhibit in the exhibition An Other Place at Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart. The concept was the likely congruence between works produced in/from/about our respective islands and given this the potential for future/ongoing art and research projects between Ireland and Tasmania.
Research Contribution	The work We ran/I am, 2007 resulted from research into the key sites of provision to the Military during the Black Line campaign of 1831 in which Tasmanian Aboriginal people were intended to be driven into capture on the Tasman Peninsula by a moving line of military and civilian ‘settlers’ over a period of 5 weeks. I was photographed ‘running’ at these sites in specially made trousers that alluded to the forced provision of clothes to Aboriginal people in that period to prevent easy escape. This work is part of an ongoing investigative project to visually represent otherwise indistinct histories and reconnect events to place.
Research Significance	The exhibition An Other Place ran from 22 March - 29 April 2007 resulted in solid critical feedback: eg - http://www.realtimearts.net/feature/Ten_Days_on_the_Island/8465 and a well received 21page publication (isbn: 978-0-646-47434-2). Additionally Devonport Regional Gallery acquired my work: We ran/I am, 2007, which was subsequently loaned by National Gallery of Victoria, Senior Curator Judith Ryan for inclusion in the exhibition: Power and Beauty at Heide, Victoria.
