Abstract
This paper explores the values contradictions and tensions that exist for Technology teachers positioned at the centre of competing curriculum values interests. It draws on the middle years of Technology curriculum in Queensland (the discussion would not be atypical elsewhere in Australia), as well as the National Framework For Values Education in Australian Schools. The metaphor of teacher as professional gatekeeper is used to illustrate the positioning of teachers amongst the not altogether consistent values interests expressed implicitly and explicitly by governments, managers, the profession, parents and students. We discuss matters of pedagogy, assessment and the kinds of values and practices that contribute to both the intended and the hidden curriculum. We argue that the challenge to the conscientious teacher, of articulating and arbitrating a vast spectrum of values, is significant if such problems as tokenism, reductionism and bias are to be avoided. Ultimately, teachers' personal and collective professional judgement is of great importance.
