Abstract
This book is an expanded French version of The Diva and Doctor God, co-authored with Francesca Miller, which was published in the US in 2010. It is a biography of Dr Samuel Pozzi (1846-1918), gynaecologist and surgeon, who is regarded as the 'father' of French and European gynaecology. It is based on extensive correspondence and other material in archives and libraries in France to which I have had access, and much of which has not previously been published. The French version also contains much new material more relevant to French readers than English ones. The book deals with Pozzi's life and work, his role in establishing the first gynaecological service in France, his teaching and appointment as the first professor of gynaecology in France and his publications in particular the Treatise in Gynaecology which is a magnificent work used as a basic text (in English, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian as well as French) up until 1930. Pozzi had a lifelong friendship with the actress Sarah Bernhardt and I had access to more than a hundred letters from Bernhardt to Pozzi which had not previously been published, hence the title.

Sarah. » |
