Abstract

This video installation was first exhibited in the Playtime exhibition held in May 2011 at the Cereal Box artist run space in Townsville, Australia. Was later featured in the Dark Euphoria exhibition at the eMerge Media Space in October 2011.

From the original didactic: "Competing screens and competing time slots keep the fuzz box busy. When computer screens are used to recruit instruments of war, 4 year olds in plastic tiaras pull off booty slaps and the world's most wanted channel flicker is caught catching up with the BBC World Service you know that times are tough – and weird. So, as it has been 10 years since the befuddled distraction of Story Time with George it's probably best to see if Uncle Kurt can guide as through the hills and furrows of this very 21st C coming of age story... Ladies & Gentlemen: Vonnegut’s Firefight Fuzz Box."

Research Statement

Research Background Structurally the most applicable reference that can be used to describe the technical approach to Vonnegut's Firefight Fuzz Box (VFFFB) installation is the methodology of the video assemblage or more classically, visual collage. This is a genre of video art practice going back to the late 1960s and pioneered by artists such as Nam June Paik and Bill Viola and more recently Craig Baldwin.
Research Contribution VFFFB was designed to explore the visual media environment on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of September 11. The work is a continuation of Goodwin's earlier politically motivated social commentary films: George WDC, Johnny's Parade and Musafari which dealt with issues pertaining to the war in Iraq, Australia's treatment of refugees and the broader concerns surrounding freedom of speech and government sanctioned surveillance.
Research Significance The media and its ancillary content providers have a major influence on how society is shaped and how culture morphs with and against its various agendas and narrative constructions. By repositioning pre-recorded images of classical cultural tropes and accepted historical constructions new meaning can be derived from broadcast ephemera which may, in some small part, help to get closer to our feelings about - and our interpretation of - notions of truth and fiction.
