Abstract

The Hodgkinson Goldfield was proclaimed in June 1876. Although geologically similar to the great alluvial producer to its north - the Palmer - the Hodgkinson was predominantly a reefing field. While official reports retained an optimistic outlook for gold into the early twentieth century, the Hodgkinson was incorporated into the Chillagoe Gold and Mineral Field in 1909. While the Mount Mulligan disaster brought an end to coal mining, interest in wolfram fluctuated with demand.
