Abstract
[Extract] The concept of organizational "coherence" is certainly not new, as the 1946 date for our opening quote from renowned theorist Peter Drucker indicates. Nor is it new to think of a school as a piece of music-images of in-tune schools and out-of-tune schools are easy enough to conjure up.
What is new is the understanding that, without a process in place to ensure a high level of "coherence" between key organizational factors, school leaders cannot easily proceed to create the fundamental conditions for sustainable school success. W hat are the key factors? And what are the implications for school leaders? These questions provide the impetus for this chapter on the second C-B dynamic.
