Abstract

Icarus 2 is an image incorporating shards collected over time and then digital images of such with drawn elements. This image blurs the boundary between the photographic or digital and the hand drawn composition. Icarus 2 draws directly from the composition of the Flemish master, Breughal and his painting of Icarus.

Research Statement

Research Background Icarus 2 is a digital image with hand drawn elements and refers to Breughal's painting of Icarus. The key items on the work are composition where I pay tribute to the master Breughal.
Research Contribution Images can be made with any tool and in this work from the series 'Shards', I base the research on composition from the 16th century Flemish Master Breughal. My collection of old shards and broken glass and crockery relates directly to looking at past images to put back together the new image with digital technology and drawing.
Research Significance Significant is the way composition transcends disciplines and time. This work is a culmination of 'visual research' and 'theory led' practice. It may present an alter argument for the way creative arts researchers look at practice-led research and provide an alternative as an 'art history-theory-practice' research method.
