Abstract

'Similarity and Difference: Peach' is a watercolour exhibited in 'Glimpse of China' in the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, 2011. The series of nine watercolours demonstrate the artist's reflection on culture and society in China and Australia through a focus on flora and fauna, as signs of similarity and difference. These watercolours, including 'Similarity and Difference: Frangipani' constitute the work from one artist Anne Lord who was invited to Foshan in Guangzhou Province, China in September-October 2010.

Research Statement

Research Background Over the past decade Lord has been contributing to a further understanding of cultural and social values between China and Australia through visual art work and publication of image and text in catalogues about that art work.
Research Contribution Lord's creative art work for the exhibition 'Glimpse of China' contributes to the body of work the artist has developed over the last ten years in relation to similarity and difference between the two cultures. These images and ideas behind them are derived from a postmodern perspective and exemplify the binary as a useful theoretical model to investigate cultural understanding.
Research Significance The significance of developing art works for the exhibition 'Glimpse of China' in Townsville provides some relationship between Townville's Chinese community and the region's art community. Further to this the work stems from cultural exchange in China and strengthens ties with cultural groups beyond the region. In relation to the topic explored the significance of the work also brings attention to our shared cultural and economic connections.
