Research Statement
Research Background | The most challenging part in art is to be true to one’s own vision. Consistency is not achieved by having the same subject matter, or using the same medium or even range of colour and tone. So what is this elusive element that is one’s own vision? Recent years have given me opportunities to explore the boundaries of my own vision. A number of overseas and Australian residencies have exposed me to different cultural and natural environments, prompting different responses. |

Research Contribution | My first impulse has been a journalistic approach with sketchbook work and first impressions. The second step has been to extract an essence that resonated with me to create a series of interpretive works (paintings, drawings as well as prints) relating to those locations. |
Research Significance | It has been possible to have exhibitions in most of the locations of residencies, both in Australia and overseas. This is evident from my exhibition record of the last six years. My sketchbooks have been published on the internet and the most recent one is a blog. At the time of writing this I am spending several months on a yacht in the Caribbean responding to that marine and cultural environment. My research aim remains the same: to recognize and assert my visual response. |
