The wood engraving 'Dancing with the Dog: Dangerous Liaisons' is an image created specifically for and submitted in response to an invitation to show new work in the Ninth "Iosif Iser" (2011) Biennale of Contemporary Engraving in Romania. It is also reproduced in the catalogue, ISBN: 978-606-8019-22-2

Research Statement

Research Background The International Biennale "Iosif Iser" (exhibition) of Contemporary Engraving (2011) is in its 9th edition. The event is organised by http://www.artmuseum.ro/expo/2011/11/Iosif_Iser_2011. Entry for this exhibition was by invitation after earlier work was exhibited in the Miniature Prints Award in Bulgaria.
Research Contribution Over twenty years the artist Anne Lord has been producing drawings with both explicit imagery and implicit themes. These have been interpreted in various media. This image 'Dancing with the Dog: Dangerous Liaisons' can be interpreted as a brush with depressing situations. At the same time the dancer and the dog appear to be engaged in having a wild dance. Appearances are deceiving and this little engraving suggests deep and dark feelings beneath the joviality.
Research Significance It is significant to allow the darker sides of our activities to emerge in the work of creative artists. In this work the artist's conscious decision is to make both happiness and grief be part of the dance of life. The art work responds to the impressions made on the artist by major international artists from Munch to Sandro Chia and Australian Juan daVila.
