Abstract

'Palmetum Print' followed the artist's series of drawings on site in the Townsville Palmetum. They were made specifically for the artists' book about the Palmetum. Creating drawings to capture the complexity of light and shade from the garden led to the decision to use a mixed media of linocut and screenprinted colours for this work.

Research Statement

Research Background 'Palmetum Print' is a work created by Anne Lord for an artists' book. In this work Lord utilizes her extensive knowledge of the Fine Arts printmaking tradition.
Research Contribution Palmetum Print (76 x 56 cm) incorporates new ways to create marks for an image about the diversity of palms in this council run park. It is reproduced in a catalogue, on page 45, especially for the exhibition with the same title '30 @ 30: a collection exhibition celebrating Perc Tucker Regional Gallery's 30th birthday'. The text on page 46 attributes the artist's work.
Research Significance Visual artists create work using a variety of mediums. In this case, the cutting of lino relates to the sharp manner that light hits palm fronds in the north Queensland dry-tropics environment. The additional screen printed colours have been made with sharp stencil outlines in order to bring into play the layers of movement that russling leaves suggest. It brings attention to the dry tropics.
