Abstract
Stranger to the Tropics:
I was not born here - I am a stranger to these tropical colours, both above ground and in the depths of the Great Barrier Reef. The cold, crisp whites of prairie winters are unseen here. Instead, exotic blooms thrive, then wither and compost into t he rainforest floor. Torn leaves, misshapen branches and pods carrying the seeds of new life appear and disappear into this murky carpet as nature recycles itself, between the wet and dry of tropical seasons. I find beauty in this imperfection, but remain a stranger, looking for home.
Exposed:
With every piece of work, with every footprint in the sand or snow, a little more of us is exposed - to others and ultimately to ourselves.
Research Statement
Research Background | In April 2009 a solo exhibition of my acrylic paintings, "Exposed" was held at Punch Gallery in Winnipeg, Canada. This followed contributions to a group exhibition and the interest of the gallery in my visual struggle to connect my Canadian prairies background with my current location in the tropics of far north Queensland. The paintings are products of my evolving shift of colour, texture and climate/mood. |
---|---|
Research Contribution | Far North Queensland is an area of migration, with people relocating from many other parts of Australia and the world. It is also an area of extremes: in climate, landscape and colour. This exhibition examines the features of far north Queensland from an outsider perspective, highlighting the beauty and 'larger than life' features of the tropics. |
Research Significance | This research documents features of the tropical north Queensland landscape, and offers a perspective from someone who is from a very different part of the world. It was well received in Winnipeg and also in Australia, where cards of the paintings sold at markets and Cairns Art Society events. |
