Abstract
[Extract] Barry asked me to provide you all with a personal viewpoint on the need for teachers to understand the important perspectives from which students of different backgrounds view their social world. As a Torres Strait Islander, and as a person indigenous to Australia, this no doubt points to my experience as a member of a group of colonized people on a very small island in a remote part of Australia who was educated formally through a system provided by those from the West. Although we are relatively small in numbers, we are many. Our experiences and perspectives come from many changing encounters with the outside world. So how do I do this? How can I put pen to paper without omitting somebody or something? I could perhaps universalize things into a science, say like in sociology or anthropology, and refer them to you in abstract terms according to the colonial order of things - but I'm not content with drawing analogies to already-formed concepts from the West.
