Abstract
[Extract] This book traces an odyssey that began in 1967. In that year I sailed to Thursday Island in Torres Strait and began teaching in across-cultural setting for the first time in my three year-old teaching career. The challenges my Torres Strait Islander students, our school and I faced were complex and poorly understood. I made many mistakes through reading the situation wrongly, through poor preservice preparation to teach Indigenous Australians and through implementing many poorly informed policies and practices of the day. Some of the policies and practices I resisted, but much of the resistance was poorly informed.
As a result, many Torres Strait Islanders did not do well at school because most teachers struggled to tap student strengths and adequately deal with the complexities of their teaching task. There had to be better policies and practices we could have used. There had to be ways to achieve success together with Torres Strait Islander students, and I sought them. This book is designed to assist teachers working across cultures, as I had done for five years.
