Abstract

A curious feature of the curriculum of Australian universities is that few people inside or outside the university talk about it. This is not to say that curriculum is not discussed intermittently, but there is little movement towards a shared sense of what university education is about. This is surprising given the increased numbers of graduates in the community and the imminence of' mass' higher education. If there is any consensus, it is that the university curriculum should be specialised and centred heavily on 'disciplines'. But what else is it? What characteristics should all university courses have? What is diverting the debate?
