Abstract

Ron McBurnie’s “Chasing Palmer” is an exhibition of etchings influenced by the great Romantic printmaker and painter Samuel Palmer. The black and white etchings imbue the North Queensland landscape with a numinous quality rich in artistic heritage.

“Ron McBurnie is a distinguished Australian printmaker who is working out of Townsville. He is an artist for whom narrative, the sense of place and awareness of traditions all play a significant role in the process of making a print” Grishin, 2006. Canberra Times.

Research Statement

Research Background	The works in this exhibition are part of an ongoing interest the artist has in the romantic period of British printmaking centred on William Blake and the “Ancients.” The etchings have gradually evolved from including references to both North Queensland and British iconography to introducing narratives from Renaissance printmakers such at the German “Little Masters. Selected works from this series are represented in the National Gallery of Australia, most State Galleries and many regional Galleries in Australia.
Research Contribution	The etchings in the exhibition consolidate the artist’s interest in recording and transforming the North Queensland environment through the intaglio medium. Like his colleagues James Brown, Anneke Silver and Robert Preston (also from Townsville), McBurnie adds depth to landscape through a continued reference to his breadth of historical printmaking knowledge.
Research Significance	Although the work relating to Samuel Palmer began in the mid 1980’s it has gradually become more ambitious. Over time the work produced has become more complex and grown in size and degree of difficulty. This exhibition and “Romantic Etchings: in the tradition of Samuel Palmer and the Ancients” held in Brisbane in 2006 become a precursors to a large survey exhibition held at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville in 2009.
