Abstract

This session addresses concerns about the future employability of doctoral graduates. Three preferred career trajectories identified in doctoral candidates in a recent research study are explored. Strategies to enable progress along these trajectories during and after candidature are considered. The three trajectories identified are Teaching and service, Research leadership and Portfolio careers. Each trajectory is shown to differently influence graduates transition to and advancement along careers in business, industry and the academy. Development of collaborative capacity is proposed as a strategy to support smooth transitions to career futures and to realisation of social impact. Brief descriptions of these elements of collaborative capacity- distributed leadership and the faces of informed research- are provided. The session concludes by describing strategies for developing collaborative capacity to enhance career futures and social impact.
