Abstract

In his first major solo exhibition in twenty years, Richard Lane unveils a new series of 'post-painterly abstraction' works, extending upon his explorations in this field in the 1980s and 1990s. Inspired by the Townsville landscape and the ground coverings found in his own backyard - which backs directly on to the picturesque Ross River - Lane's works entice and challenge viewers with bold veils of colour.

Research Statement

Research Background	This solo exhibition of 44 abstract landscapes draws on the artist's intuition, experience and appreciation of the north Queensland landscape. The exhibition is separated into six series, each depicting a different areas of Townsville.
Research Contribution	The works are influenced by a diverse range of artists including Mark Rothko and Paul Jenkins. The artist has developed techniques to work the acrylic colour washes and manipulate the liquid's movement across the canvas over many years.
Research Significance	The works were exhibited at Townsville's premier regional art gallery, the Perc Tucker Gallery, and ran for six weeks.
