Abstract

The archetypal image of coral reefs is clear warm water, good visibility and a spectacular array of marine life, yet this diversity of organisms is quite amazing given that die water is crystal clear due to a low concentration of nutrients. Zooxanthellae, on the other hand, are uniformly brown due to a large concentration of the photosynthetic accessory pigment peridinin, which plays an essential role in harvesting visible light for photosynthesis.
