Abstract
This report presents the co-designed methods for a research project aimed at co-developing approaches to respectfully include Australian First Nations knowledges into the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting – Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA EA) framework. This research seeks to contribute to the National Ecosystem Accounting Project led by the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water, focusing on services to First Nations partners.
The project involves partnerships with Tagalaka Aboriginal Corporation in Queensland and Esperance Tjaltraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation in Western Australia, alongside academic researchers, to ensure ecosystem accounts reflect Indigenous perspectives meaningfully and respectfully. As a collaboration between First Nations peoples and non-Indigenous researchers, the project methodology emphasises co-design to ensure First Nations priorities and governance shape the ecosystem accounting methods adopted by the project in a manner that aligns with the SEEA EA.
The SEEA EA is an internationally recognized, modular accounting framework that organizes ecosystem data by extent, condition, and ecosystem services, linking ecosystems to ecosystem services and economic units with these relationships illustrated by logic chains. The ecosystem services are categorised as provisioning, regulating, and cultural services within SEEA EA.
