Abstract
The results confirm the hypothesis that substantial variation exists in protein fractionation among tropical legumes, with important implications for grazing system design. Leucaena leucocephala demonstrated superior protein concentration and ruminal degradability, supporting its established role as a high-quality protein supplement for northern Australian beef production systems. Conversely, Cajanus cajan with a greater undegradable protein fraction, may provide a complementary nitrogen source that moderates rapid rumen ammonia release when included in mixed-legume pastures. Stylosanthes viscosa and Vigna lanceolata were intermediate in CP and degradability. These findings provide practical information for producers seeking to optimise pasture composition to improve nitrogen-use efficiency, reduce urinary nitrogen losses, and enhance animal productivity in seasonally dry tropical environments. Strategic inclusion of legumes with contrasting protein degradation profiles may improve rumen function and overall system performance.
