Abstract
Inclusive care for transgender and gender-diverse people: This presentation will address the persistent health inequalities experienced by LGBTIQA+ people, focusing on transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. It will explore the unique healthcare needs of these communities, barriers to accessing inclusive care, and evidence-based strategies to promote culturally safe, person-centred healthcare. Emphasis will be placed on participatory research approaches and collaborative strategies for improving healthcare delivery and professional education. Practical insights will be shared on creating inclusive and equitable healthcare environments for LGBTIQA+ populations. The presenter is an experienced speaker with a strong publication record, having delivered presentations and webinars nationally and internationally, and brings expertise in clinical practice, research, and advocacy in LGBTIQA+ health. Recognised with the LGBTQ Inclusion Award by Pride in Health and Wellbeing and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Queensland Early Career Pharmacist Award, her research focused on TGD healthcare in pharmacy practice. This participatory research investigated the experiences and expectations of TGD people accessing pharmacy services in Australia, alongside pharmacists’ attitudes, skills, and experiences in providing care. Findings revealed that while pharmacists were seen as important providers, TGD individuals frequently encountered stigma, communication challenges, compromised privacy, and gaps in pharmacist knowledge. Although pharmacists demonstrated positive attitudes, they reported a lack of confidence and training in TGD healthcare. These insights informed the development of Australia's first online pharmacist training program in TGD healthcare, co-designed with TGD people and pharmacists. Evaluation demonstrated significant improvements in awareness, knowledge, and practice of pharmacists and pharmacy students, with pharmacists reporting positive changes in communication and patient interactions.
