Abstract
[Extract] Communication is at the heart of all doctor-patient interactions. Good communication has been shown to decrease diagnostic error and other adverse events, decrease test ordering, improve efficiency, decrease number of and prevent further escalation of complaints, improve patient and doctor satisfaction and be protective against clinician burnout. Communication skills now form part of undergraduate programs, but, with the exception of general practice training, qualified doctors receive very little training in communication and most clinical supervisors receive no training in teaching communication skills. The pace and complexities inherent in emergency care often lead to prioritisation of medical tasks over the experiences and sensibilities of people involved. There is often a disconnect between the patients’ concerns and disease understandings and the clinicians’ biomedical focus which can lead to patients feeling lost and confused and unable to make informed decisions about their care.
