Abstract
Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities across the globe, offering economic and social opportunity where traditional business markets do not reach. Despite such promise, many do not survive the first transition from entrepreneurial founder to the first-generation successor. The increasing emergence of entrepreneurial Indigenous businesses was the impetus for this literature review investigating succession planning for Indigenous small businesses. The study aimed to identify factors supporting successful leadership transitions for business sustainability. The literature identified nine studies focused on succession planning for Indigenous small businesses. An analysis and synthesis of the identified barriers, facilitators and strategies contained in the literature resulted in a conceptual framework comprised of individual, family/community, and organisational factors for guiding Indigenous business succession planning.
