Abstract

This paper presents the investigation results of flank wear and crater wear developed in the Uncoated and Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coated carbide inserts during the dry turning of three hybrid composites, viz (i) Al7075%-10%SiC-0.1% B4C, (ii) Al7075%-10%SiC-0.1% Graphene, and (iii) Al7075%-10%SiC-0.1% CNT under various machining conditions. Combined stir and squeeze casting technique with ultrasonic vibration was used for fabrication of the composites. The experimental results show that there is high flank wear in the inserts while machining B4C-based (0.9835 mm) and the lowest in Graphene-based composites (0.2314 mm) under studied machining conditions. Crater wear was observed to be high (1.4373 mm) on the inserts while machining Graphene-based composite and it was low (0.3707 mm) for B4C based composite. In the formation of chips, B4C influenced significantly more than the other two and it formed discontinuous chips through the reduction in ductility of the matrix material. However, the machinability of B4C composite was observed to be the best followed by the Graphene-based and CNT-based composites considering the range of machining parameters detailed in this research work.
