Abstract

Many people do not seek mental health support due to self-stigma; however, music can assist people in seeking support. Therefore, in this presentation, I will share findings from recent studies that have explored how attending focused music listening events can promote self-compassion and mindfulness and, in turn, how experiencing these might promote mental health help-seeking intentions. Findings from two case studies will be considered, including one focused on Indigo Project’s Listen Up sessions (in which participants engage with a curated music playlist along with oral guidance provided by a psychologist) and the other focused on Sonaur x Tender Deep Listening sessions (in which participants engage with a curated music soundtrack with no other talking). With both experiences, participants were invited to take part in individual, semi-structured interviews. Data collection and analysis is underway. Discussion of the results will centre on people’s subjective experiences including their perceived outcomes and well-being impacts. Study findings have implications for our understanding of the ways that music and mindfulness can be used in practices to promote mental health and well-being.
