Abstract

[Extract] Animal movements or migrations can be prevented by geographical features or unfavorable environmental conditions that represent physical barriers. The ability of animals to disperse and physical barriers to dispersal determine the distribution and population dynamics of species and are fundamental drivers of patterns in regional biodiversity. Environmental and physical oceanographic conditions can act as soft barriers to the dispersal of marine species (Hirschfeld et al., 2021; Riginos & Liggins, 2013; Rocha et al., 2007). However, soft barriers such as temperature gradients or upwelling cells can be permeable, and variations in climatic processes may cause the permeability to vary over space and time (Reid et al., 2016).
