Abstract

Phytoremediation, which is the use of plants in mitigating environmental contaminants, has gained consideration as an eco-friendly approach to address water and soil pollution, and its potential benefits in remediating contaminated environments are known. This chapter critically examines the accompanying dangers of contaminants entering the food chain via phytoremediation. It synthesizes current literature in order to analyze the pathways through which contaminants are absorbed, translocated, and accumulated in edible plant parts during phytoremediation. Special attention is given to the potential risks posed by the uptake of heavy metals by food crops, which can result in long-term health hazards for consumers. Factors influencing the danger of contaminants in foods through phytoremediation are explored including plant species selection, soil conditions, and the specific contaminant being targeted. Understanding the risks involved, prompting further research and the development of guidelines to safeguard both environmental sustainability and human health in phytoremediation practices is vital.
