Abstract
Students tend to hear similar, although at times conflicting, messages about clinical issues from Faculty in each medical discipline (e.g. internal medicine, surgery and psychiatry) as they rotate through clinical departments. This paper reports an initiative in a new clinical school in a regional hospital, in which clinical departments (including general practice) jointly delivered a program of monthly, interdisciplinary case-based tutorials. Faculty from all disciplines developed learning objectives and strategies for the tutorials. Each department took turns to arrange for students to select cases and to facilitate the meetings. Participating students completed a questionnaire seeking their perceptions of the value of the each tutorial. A total of 61 evaluations were received from 8 tutorials. Students rated highly the multi-disciplinary and case-based format and valued the opportunity to learn about the potential contribution of the different disciplines to each case. Negative comments were made about organisation aspects. Tutorials were not always scheduled into departmental timetables and were not always attended by Faculty from each discipline. Tutorials not well supported by all disciplines received less favourable ratings. Case selection and faculty support are critical to the success of interdisciplinary tutorials.
