Abstract

The Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers (2006) highlights, implicitly and explicitly, the significance of reflective, contemplative and mindfulness practices in achieving high quality teaching and learning. Informed by the first phase of data collection and a preliminary analysis of pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their experiences of contemplative and reflective pedagogies, this paper describes how these practices have been integrated into undergraduate professional development studies in teacher education. The data is derived from reflective letters posted to on-line Discussion Board. These letters were written as a significant component of assessment for a professional development subject required for third year teacher education students at a regional Australian university. Highlighting excerpts from student work samples and feedback, discussion and analysis focus on how the requirement for regular reflective writing and for making that writing public can effectively link pedagogy, assessment and learning in sustainable ways. The author is particularly interested in understanding how the use of reflective practices and, in particular the use of on-line Discussion Board as a forum for reflective writing impact on student learning and professional development. As this study investigates the use of on-line technologies and the express meanings students make of the university based learning experiences that are offered for development of professional understandings, skills and values, it has significant implications for teacher educators.
