Abstract

With 840 languages for a population of 8.2 million, Papua New Guinea has more languages than any other country on earth. The most widely spoken are Tok Pisin (New Guinea Pidgin English) and English, both of which have become important markers of a post-independence national identity. Informal and spoken communication tends to be in Tok Pisin, with formal and written communication still usually in English. Tok Pisin has its roots in nineteenth century Australian and Samoan plantations. In recent years it has become creolised as the dominant or only first language of many households. The English of most Papua New Guineans is influenced by the phonology, grammar, and lexicon of Tok Pisin, with great variation due to unequal access to formal English-medium education.
