Abstract
Jayson Wau investigated three strategies for the synthesis of valuable commodity chemicals from renewable materials. Initially, he studied solar photooxygenations of sugarcane-derived furfural to important platform chemicals. Afterwards, he developed a reliable procedure for the technical conversion of Lemon scented gum oil to a powerful insect repellent. Finally, Jayson Wau examined local Xanthostemon essential oils and discovered several biological active compounds. The results from his project offer the sugarcane and essential oil industries of Australia new opportunities for waste utilization, product diversification and value adding.
