Abstract
This thesis examines the history of the Roman Catholic Church from the perspective of the diocese of Townsville 1863-1983. A local community's story is presented in the context of the social and religious problems initially inherited from Europe. Local circumstance, and the fundamental crises affecting European civilization and international Catholicism gradually force a fundamental re-examination of these values. Changing attitudes towards the Aboriginal peoples of the continent are seen as central in the analysis of the European settlers' attempt to discover an uniquely Australian, national and Catholic identity.
