Abstract

In the Oxford Handbook of Emotions, Sloboda (2010, pp. 511-512) wrote that “for most of its short life, the psychological study of emotional responses to music has focused primarily on the non-everyday”. However, as he acknowledged, “everyday music listening probably comprises the bulk of ‘what is there’ within contemporary music experience”. With this in mind, it is important to examine people’s emotional responses to everyday music experiences. In this presentation, we will draw on theory and recent research to present an updated summary of the state of knowledge on everyday music listening and emotions. This includes drawing on the emerging body of knowledge from studies making use of Experience Sampling Methodologies, which allow for real-time everyday music listening experiences to be reported with high ecological relevance. While emotion regulation is often the focus of such work, this presentation will broaden the coverage to consider broader goal achievement, including self-compassion, and consider the uses and gratifications of everyday listening against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, offering valuable insights into the relationship between music listening and human emotions.
