Abstract

Diseases affecting organs and tissues essential for maintaining good health-related quality of life are major global health concerns. The supplies of donor organs and tissues are becoming increasingly limited, hence there is greater demand for alternatives or approaches to repair these damaged tissues and organs. Bioresorbable polymer-based tissue engineering scaffolds are porous materials that promote cell seeding to revive, maintain, or repair damaged tissues and organs that have gained attention as remediating materials in modern medicine. These materials provide temporal support to tissues during regeneration; and afterward, they degrade and are reabsorbed by the body. This chapter provides an overview of the synthesis of bioresorbable polymers for tissue engineering scaffolds. The common fabrication technologies are reviewed, along with the emerging technologies to fabricate these novel materials. The major applications are also covered and a perspective about the future of bioresorbable polymers for tissue engineering scaffolds is provided.
